The NFL Coaching Carnage Begins

Like clockwork, the NFL season ends and coaches get fired. No fewer than seven NFL teams are now looking for new head coaches. Like a manager in Major League Baseball, being a head coach in the NFL often means your job security hangs by a thread. Unmotivated or disgruntled players can help hasten a coach’s departure, as can injuries and just plain bad luck. That’s not to say that NFL coaches always get fired for circumstances beyond their control, as most of them are given some wiggle room to right the ship when they run into bad luck. With that said the wiggle room eventually runs out and a franchise has to make a decision on whether to stick it out one more year or go ahead and change directions.

In Philadelphia, the Andy Reid era is finally ending. Reid spent a long 14 years with the Eagles, with the team playing in exactly 19 playoff games. Management invested heavily on talent over the past few seasons and Reid simply couldn’t do anything with it. The team came alive at the end of last year, finishing strong and leading the fans and most NFL analysts to believe that the team was headed for a big 2012 season. It turned into a disaster at 4-12 and Reid has been let go. He is rumored to be in the mix for the coaching vacancy in Arizona, where Ken Wisenhunt was dismissed after a disappointing finish to a season that began with such promise. Wisenhunt took the Cardinals to the Super Bowl during his tenure, but has struggled to find a quarterback since the departure of Kurt Warner and the team has struggled offensively for several seasons.

In Chicago, the Bears were swarmed with love (no pun intended) early in the season as they seemed to have mended their offensive woes, getting off to a 7-1 start and looking like a serious Super Bowl contender. Lovie Smith and company couldn’t keep the momentum going and finished up 3-5 over their last eight games and missing the playoffs again. Norv Turner had some promising moments in San Diego, as he took the Chargers to three AFC championship games, but couldn’t get over the hump. The last two seasons have been wildly mediocre and he was let go from a job that may be his final shot at an NFL head coaching position. Apparently the Chargers are trying to coax Jon Gruden back to the sidelines. In Buffalo, Chan Gailey simply couldn’t work around a poor defensive unit and his three year term ends with a 16-32 record. Lovie Smith has apparently made overtures to the Buffalo brass about the vacancy and might be a good fit there.

Two other head coaches on the unemployment line are Romeo Crennel and Pat Shurmur. Both coaches had only two seasons for their teams, but long term rebuilding doesn’t seem to make sense to the Kansas City Chiefs or Cleveland Browns, where they are hungry for wins right now. Crennel did a nice job with the Chiefs defense, but the offense was inept and he never found an answer. Kansas City is another job that Andy Reid has been linked to. Shurmur is likely the casualty of a new ownership group wanting to clean house in Cleveland. The Browns finished the season 5-11, but had a nice three game winning streak late in the season that may have been a sign of progress. Right now, it looks as though Ken Wisenhunt and Chip Kelly are on the Cleveland wish list.
